In 1986, one hundred concrete supports were installed along its shoreline to combat erosion, but these tetrapods compromised the temple’s aesthetic integrity and caused environmental issues, including redirected wave erosion, sand accumulation on the sea floor, and disruptions to coral reef biodiversity. The temple (pura in Balinese) is built at the edge (ulu) of a 70-meter-high (230 ft) cliff or rock (watu) projecting into the sea. Unreliable source in folklore, this rock is said to be part of Dewi Danu’s petrified barque.

Tegallalang is a district in the Gianyar Regency, Bali, Indonesia.
